Anyone can understand! Camp Rules & Basic Manners

Japanese campgrounds have various rules and manners. Due to the recent trend of camping and mountaineering, awareness of nature conservation has increased and more people have come to enjoy nature. This has increased interest in rules and manners. Here, I would like to focus on public campgrounds and BBQ sites.

Rules

1. Basically, take your all garbage home with you.

Garbage disposal costs money. Therefore, most of the places where you can use it free of charge are displayed as “Please take your trash home with you”.
Even if there is a trash can in the park, it is for walking users and does not include BBQ or trash generated at the camp.
* If you dispose of illegally, you will be punished by imprisonment with work for not more than 5 years and not more than 10 million yen, in violation of Article 25, Paragraph 1, Item 14 of the Disposal Law. Alternatively, eyewitnesses may publish photos on SNS.
*Most of the pay facilities can throw away trash (separation is required).

2. Basically, open fire is prohibited.

Unexpectedly, most Japanese BBQ sites, campgrounds, and riversides are displayed as “No open fire”.
This is due to the problems of charcoal disposal after a bonfire, the death of microorganisms in the soil, the burning of the lawn, and the prevention of forest fires. Therefore, it is a rule to use a bonfire stand when making a bonfire.
*Some of the paid campgrounds can open fire.

3. Take your charcoal and ash home with you.

Charcoal does not return to the soil. Since charcoal is carbon, it is not decomposed. Charcoal is like trash and it costs money to dispose of it.
Put the fired charcoal in a charcoal extinguisher and take it home with you. Or put it out in a plastic bag after putting out the fire with water and take it home with you. Charcoal is thrown away in “burning garbage”. We recommend adding a charcoal extinguisher to the BBQ and camping equipment.

4. Don’t make noise.

Japanese people prefer a quiet environment.
Recently, the performance of small speakers has improved and you can now enjoy music anywhere. But, the music you like can be offensive to other people. For example, there are various people, such as those who want to spend a quiet time and those who cannot sleep when there is a noise.
Being in nature makes it difficult to see the surroundings because of the feeling of openness. BBQ sites and campgrounds are public places. Be careful not to make loud sounds or voices.

5. Use facilities carefully and cleanly.

Parks and campgrounds are public places that many people use. Use it as cleanly and with care as you would in your own home. Some people leave toilet paper in a littered state in the toilet, and others throw raw garbage and leftover food into the sink. Please use it cleanly and carefully so that the next person can use it comfortably.
*Never destroy the equipment (you will be punished by law).

6. Don’t occupy the shared space.

It is common in groups, but it is to set up a tent in front of a shared space such as a kitchen or a toilet to block the flow line (passage) of other people. Even if there is no place, be sure to secure the flow line.

7. Don’t camping or BBQ outside the designated area.

Enjoy BBQ and camping only at designated locations. It is often designated as a means of protecting the natural environment, but in some cases it may cause a forest fire or become involved in flood damage.
*All responsibility (life, damages, etc.) in case of trouble should be given to you.

8. Cherish nature.

In addition to the open fire ban mentioned above, it is forbidden to fell trees or cut branches without permission. When using a hammock, rope work can damage trees. Let’s challenge after learning how to do it.

Manners

1. Doesn’t violate the privacy of others.

There is privacy even in public places. Please do not enter into the conversation that the other party does not want, or enter into the other party’s tent without permission or look into it.

2. Tent set up with some distance.

If you can afford the space, it is good to set up a tent about 5m away from other people. When it’s crowded, it’s hard to get into trouble if you set up a tent after getting consent from other people, “Is it okay to set up a tent around here?”

3. Don’t set up a tent at night.

Most of the campsite visitors basically get up at sunrise, and have a life cycle of dinner and sunset before sunset. Therefore, there are many campsites that become quiet around 21:00.
The work noise generated during nighttime setup is very annoying. Also, if the setup itself works in the dark, parts will be lost and it will take more time than usual.
Setting up a tent at night can give other people an unpleasant impression and create an awkward atmosphere the next day. So, when going to camp, it is important to check the arrival time and the schedule, and if necessary change the schedule or consider canceling it.

4. Avoid cooking late at night.

It is midnight after 21:00 at the campsite. The noise of grilling something on the iron plate in the quiet campsite and the metallic noise of rice pans and pots are very annoying to other people. When eating late at night, refrain from making noise and recommend food that can be easily cooked with hot water. Before you start cooking, it is important to check the surrounding conditions (whether you are sleeping or not).

5. Make it cleaner than when you came.

This is an important spirit of Japan.
When you return home from where you camp, make sure there is no litter in the area. If you find trash, pick it up as much as possible, even if it doesn’t belong to you (although it’s difficult for something too big). If you clean it well, other people who will use it later will be able to comfortably stay there.

What I want to Message you.

Camping and barbecues are a lot of fun. I want to enjoy it. However, you should always be aware that you are in a public place. Let’s cherish “friendly to nature and people” rather than self-centered fun.
